History, Crime & Culture

Our first half-day of project work takes us into the fascinating local history of Geel – with a touch of true crime. Together with a local city guide, we discover Geel’s unique tradition of family care, uncover the political tensions of 19th-century Belgium, and investigate the mysterious murder of Mayor Le Bon.

The second project day takes us on a journey through culture. What does culture mean to us? What lies behind the stereotypes we have about Flemish and Spanish culture? And what do we actually have in common? By exploring traditions, customs, everyday life, similarities and differences, our Belgian and Spanish students work together to create a genuine cultural bridge between Geel and Bilbao.

Youth Dreams: Green Connections – Looking for Good Practice

Our pupils are setting out on a journey of discovery around the city, looking for inspiring examples of places that have become greener, more inclusive or more sustainable. They are exploring locations where history, nature and community come together in a special way, and investigating how smart interventions can strengthen a neighbourhood.

To help them get started, the Urban Development Policy Adviser from the City of Geel will talk about urban planning and the many factors that play a role in designing a pleasant and forward-looking living environment. She will highlight inspiring projects, such as plans for ‘slow roads’ for pedestrians and cyclists, and take the pupils on a cycle tour past dreams that have become reality in the town: small-scale interventions that are already contributing to a broader long-term vision.

Armed with this knowledge and inspiration, the pupils set to work themselves. They take a fresh look at their surroundings and seek out places that have even more potential. How can these places contribute to greater biodiversity, sustainability or connections between people? And what if they could achieve all those goals at the same time?

In addition, they collect tangible mementos in the form of durable beads made from stone, wood and other natural materials. They turn these into a personalised bag charm – a small keepsake that symbolises their experiences and insights. During the exchange in Digne-les-Bains, these bag charms can be further enriched with new memories, stories and encounters, so that they become a lasting memento of a special international adventure.

On Wednesday, in the first part of this exchange between Geel and Firenze, the students will work together as “eco-auditors” to find out how sustainable our school really is. In mixed teams we will investigate four zones: waste and food, energy and climate, water, & mobility and green space.
After gathering reliable data in different ways, each zone team then develops one realistic proposal, including a cost estimate, a time plan and a first step to improve the school’s sustainability.
After a collective vote, the winning proposal will actually be carried out at our school in the coming months, with support from the school management. Future comparing of both the Italian and Belgian schools can be done in Firenze, if the project work allows it.

On Friday we will go on an educational walk with an experienced guide, who will (inter)actively teach us about sustainability in our school’s environment, and specifically the area of “de Belse Bossen”. We will learn which efforts have already been made to create a sustainable forestland and how we plan on improving it even more in the future.

How can a strong sense of belonging make individuals and communities more inclusive, resilient and courageous? What creates a sense of belonging, what threatens it and how can young people actively contribute to strengthening it? How do people feel when they are connected to a group or community, and what happens when they feel excluded or disconnected?

In Geel, we explore these questions through our unique tradition of community-based inclusion and our UNESCO-recognized Foster Family Care system.

On the first day of our project work, we will visit MPI Oosterlo, a care organization located in Oosterlo, a village in the city of Geel. The organization provides support and guidance to children, young people and adults with intellectual disabilities. Its mission is to help each individual develop their talents, achieve the highest possible level of independence and enjoy a fulfilling quality of life. At the same time, MPI Oosterlo strives to create an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate actively in the society.

Our students will participate in the activities organised for the residents of MPI. This can be a highly valuable experience for everyone involved. It creates opportunities for meaningful social interaction and fosters inclusion by bringing together young people with different backgrounds, experience and abilities. Through these shared activities, students develop greater understanding, empathy, and respect for diversity. Furthermore, such collaboration contributes to building a more inclusive society.

On the second day of our projectwork, we visit OPZ Geel. The Openbaar Psychiatrisch Zorgcentrum Geel (OPZ Geel) is a specialized psychiatric care centre. It provides professional mental health care for children, adolescents, adults and older people who need more specialized support than primary care services can offer. One of the most remarkable aspects of OPZ Geel is its connection with the unique tradition of Geelse Gezinsverpleging (Geel Foster Family Care). For centuries, people with mental health problems have been welcomed into local foster families, where they can live as members of the community while receiving professional support. This model of care has made Geel internationally famous and is often seen as an example of social inclusion in mental health care.

Make Move R(e)use – because change starts with us!

What happens to the waste we produce and throw away?

From radioactive waste to baking waffles the traditional way—waste is everywhere, and the choices we make today shape the future.

Together with our Slovenian guests from Ruse, our students are visiting Tabloo in Dessel to discover how to handle radioactive waste. We’re also rolling up our sleeves ourselves: baking waffles together and creating unique stop-motion films using waste materials from our local area. From waste to story, from ingredients to waffles, and from guests to new friends!

‘The art of silence’

In a world filled with constant noise, our project explores the profound impact of sound and silence on students’ well-being and learning in their school environment.

We are going to investigate acoustics at school and in classrooms, not just as a matter of comfort, but as a necessary condition for successful learning and stress reduction.

  • How can we protect students from the overwhelming effects of sensory overload?
  • How can we deal with noise pollution and raise awareness of its impact on stress and learning performance?
  • How can we reduce our own stress in overwhelming situations?

We will tackle these questions by conducting online surveys, interviews, and decibel measurements. Workshops on heart coherence and a creative workshop crafting acoustic paintings will help students understand and regulate their physiological responses to stress. By uniting science, art, and personal well-being, we aim to create a healthier, more inclusive, and sustainable school for everyone.

Groeien in leren
