Welcome to Sint-Dimpnacollege in Geel, part of the KOGEKA school community. Our school focuses on a broad general education and prepares students for further study. We support their growth as learners and as individuals.
We help students develop effective study methods and become confident learners. Clear communication and the use of ICT support their learning.
Education is about more than knowledge. We encourage students to listen to others, express their ideas and feelings, and develop their individual talents.
Learning and living together are central to school life. We value understanding and cooperation, and work towards a welcoming classroom and school environment.
From Latin School to College
There is a very long tradition of education in Geel. In the beginning of the 15th century the municipality Geel founded a “Latin School”. It’s one of the oldest secondary schools in the Dutch speaking region. At first it was a a preparatory school who wanted to pursue a career as a cleric or a study at university. Contrary to many similar schools, the “Latin School” remained alive for centuries. The school especially recruited in the duchy of Brabant from the 16th to the 18th century. Between 1677 and 1777 there was a period of growth. The former pupils of the school also achieved good results at the university of Leuven. However, the consequences of the French reign (1795-1814) and the education policy of King Willem I (1814-1830) damaged the school severely.
The Sint-Aloysiuscollege emerges out of the Latin School in the 19th century. The organisation is led by the diocese with financial support of the city of Geel. For years only boys are allowed to go to school there.
The foundation of Sint-Dimpnalyceum
Secondary education for girls didn’t start until late in the 20th century. On September 1 1959, after a question of the local clergy, the sisters Annonciaden of Huldenburg started a Latin-Greek division for girls. That is how the Sint-Dimpnalyceum came to life. Both the College and the Lyceum grew extensively in the course of the years. They kept on promoting the spirit of the traditional secondary education, but with attention to the demands of modern education.
Joining forces within KOGEKA
At the end of the 20th century the free catholic schools of Geel and Kasterlee decided to work together. This way the school community KOGEKA (Catholic Education Geel Kasterlee) was founded on September 1 1999. Contrary to the vast majority of secondary schools and school communities in Flanders, it formed a close unity with one board. All of the infrastructure was also gradually united in one foundation. The different fields of study and divisions were rationalised and concentrated on each campus. In this context the Sint-Dimpnacollege (KOGEKA 6) was founded. The new school grouped all the A-levels of study (ASO-humaniora) of the second and third form of the late College and Lyceum. So it was the direct heir of the ancient “Latin School”. The campus of the Sint-Dimpnacollege is located in the buildings of the old Lyceum. The school community KOGEKA consists of about 4200 pupils and 700 staff members. The Sint-Dimpnacollege counts 600 pupils and 80 staff.
Sint-Dimpnacollege stresses form, study, growth, community and respect. The school wishes to shape the entire personality of the individual pupil: homo universalis. Studywork is guided with attention for method, swift communication and ICT possibilities. Listening to others, trying to relate to them and expressing opinions and emotions is also a very important skill. Apart from this development of the individual, also working and living together is key. It is aimed for in a pleasant classroom atmosphere and school environment.
